New rules for electric scooters will come into force on Vienna’s public transport network on 1 September 2026. From that date, e-scooters will be treated like bicycles on the Underground and may be carried only outside peak hours.
On weekdays, passengers will be allowed to take e-scooters onto Underground trains between 9:00 and 15:00, and again from 18:30 until the end of service. Their transport will be permitted all day on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.
However, e-scooters and electric bicycles will be completely banned from Wiener Linien buses and trams, as reported by 5 Minuten. The restriction will also apply to foldable electric bikes. Wiener Linien says the new rules are intended to create more space and make it easier for passengers to board and leave vehicles, especially during busy periods.
Foldable scooters without electric motors will remain allowed at all times and on all vehicles. According to the transport operator, they take up much less space when folded.
Passengers who break the new rules may receive a €50 fine. The same penalty can be imposed on anyone who rides a scooter on a station platform, where riding is prohibited.
Ulli Sima, Vienna’s councillor for public transport, described the city’s buses, trams and Underground as the backbone of climate-friendly mobility. She said clear rules were necessary to protect the safety and comfort of millions of passengers.
Monika Unterholzner of Wiener Stadtwerke said e-scooters were part of modern urban life, but added that shared spaces required careful rules.
Wiener Linien managing director Alexandra Reinagl said passenger feedback and internal research showed that e-scooters were often seen as disruptive in crowded vehicles. They could also slow the movement of passengers during boarding and exit. The updated regulations, she said, would create a clearer system and improve everyday travel across Vienna’s public transport network.
