Greek PM to Attend Trilateral Summit in Cairo Amid Syria Talks

International

ATHENS – Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is set to visit Cairo on January 8 for a trilateral summit with Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi and Greek Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides. The summit, marking the 10th anniversary of regional cooperation between Greece, Egypt, and Greek Cyprus, will focus on recent developments in Syria, energy collaboration, and regional security.

Key discussions will revolve around Türkiye’s proposed maritime agreement with Syria, announced in December 2024. The agreement, pending a stable government in Damascus, aims to establish maritime boundaries for hydrocarbon exploration, potentially affecting Greek Cypriot interests. Greek authorities have expressed concerns that such an agreement could destabilize the region, emphasizing the transitional nature of Syria’s political situation.

Energy integration will also feature prominently, particularly the Greece-Egypt electricity grid interconnection (GREGY) project, which seeks to enhance energy links between North Africa and Europe.

In related developments, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud will visit Athens on January 10 to meet Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis. Their discussions will likely address broader regional dynamics, including Riyadh’s engagement with Syria’s new leadership.

This high-level diplomatic activity underscores the shifting geopolitical landscape and the focus on securing energy and regional stability.
