UK Introduces Pre-Travel Authorization for Visa-Free Visitors

Europe

LONDON – Starting January 8, 2025, travelers from 48 countries who don’t need a visa to visit the UK must now apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before traveling. This digital system, similar to the US ESTA, pre-clears visitors for entry and is required for trips under six months for tourism, business, or short-term study.

The ETA costs £10 (about $12.50) and can be applied for online or through the UK government’s app. Applicants need to upload a passport photo, provide personal details, and answer questions about their travel plans. Applications typically take about 20 minutes, with decisions usually made within three days. However, travelers can still visit the UK while waiting for a decision if they’ve already applied.

The system initially launched for Gulf Cooperation Council nationals in 2024 and now expands to travelers from countries like the US, Canada, and Australia. EU citizens will need an ETA starting April 2, 2025. ETAs are valid for two years and multiple entries but are linked to the passport used during the application, requiring renewal if the passport expires.

While an ETA streamlines entry, final admission is still subject to UK Border Force checks upon arrival. Full details are available on the UK government website.
