KUWAIT CITY — The European Union signaled its intent to take part in shaping Gaza’s future, with its top diplomat Kaja Kallas saying the bloc should have a seat at the table of U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposed transitional authority for the war-torn enclave, according to “Hurriyet Daily News”.
“Yes, we feel that Europe has a great role, and we should also be on board with this,” Kallas told reporters on Sunday, when asked about the EU’s participation in Trump’s so-called “Board of Peace.”
The EU is already among the largest donors of aid to the Palestinians and maintains ties with both Israel and the Palestinian Authority. For Kallas, that makes Europe more than just a financial backer. “I think Europe should not only be a payer, but also a player,” she said on the sidelines of an EU–Gulf Cooperation Council meeting in Kuwait.
Trump last week unveiled a 20-point plan aimed at ending the conflict in Gaza and guiding its postwar governance. The proposal envisions the territory being administered by a temporary technocratic Palestinian committee, charged with running daily public services while avoiding factional politics.
Oversight would fall to the “Board of Peace,” chaired by Trump himself and including former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, which would manage the flow of international funding until the Palestinian Authority undergoes reforms and resumes control of Gaza.
Hamas and Israel are holding indirect talks in Cairo over the U.S. initiative, which has already sparked debate across the region. Kallas said Arab partners see value in Europe’s inclusion, adding, “They understand that it is in the interest of everybody if we are there. Hopefully the Israelis agree as well.”
