According to Austrian National Television (ORF), Saudi authorities have confirmed the detention of a 20-year-old Austrian citizen from Lower Austria, who has been held in custody for over ten months. The young man is accused of carrying out a knife attack at the Al-Haram Mosque in Mecca, one of Islam’s holiest sites, on March 11, 2024, during the start of Ramadan. Saudi officials claim the attack, reportedly motivated by extremist religious beliefs, left five people severely injured.
The suspect, who hails from the Bruck an der Leitha district, allegedly purchased a knife shortly before the incident and deliberately targeted a security officer at the mosque. Austrian officials were officially notified of the attack by Saudi authorities on March 20, 2024. Documents provided by Saudi officials describe the attack as an act of violence inspired by radical ideology.
Further investigations have uncovered links between the young man and other alleged terror plots. He is believed to be a close associate of a 19-year-old man from Ternitz, also in Lower Austria, who is suspected of planning attacks at a Taylor Swift concert scheduled to take place at Vienna’s Ernst-Happel-Stadion in August 2024. The concert, along with two additional Swift performances in Vienna, was canceled after the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) provided a critical tip-off.
Court documents in Saudi Arabia indicate the detained Austrian was a follower of the Islamic State (IS) and suggest his actions were part of a broader pattern of religious extremism and radicalization. The attack at the Grand Mosque and the disrupted concert plots highlight a worrying trend of transnational terrorism, involving coordination between extremists across borders.
