Austria and Jordan have called for a return to diplomacy to resolve the ongoing war involving Israel, the US and Iran, as Jordan’s Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi visited Vienna to meet Austrian Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger (NEOS).
At a joint press conference, Meinl-Reisinger stressed that “only diplomacy and a return to diplomacy can bring a solution” to disputes over the opening of the Strait of Hormuz and preventing nuclear weapons. She described Iranian attacks on Jordanian territory as “unacceptable” and affirmed Austria’s solidarity with Jordan, according to ORF News.
Safadi said Jordan is working to strengthen its defense capabilities through cooperation with partner countries. To that end, Austria and Jordan signed an agreement on military collaboration, including training measures. Meinl-Reisinger called Jordan “an important anchor of stability in the region.”
Both sides expressed unity on the broader Middle East conflict. They urged all parties to respect the UN Security Council ceasefire resolution and called on Israel to allow adequate humanitarian aid into Palestinian territories. Austria condemned violence by radical settlers in the West Bank “in the strongest terms” and rejected any plans to resettle Palestinians from Gaza.
Safadi thanked Austria for its support of UNRWA, the UN relief agency for Palestinians, calling it “essential” and noting that more than five million Palestinians depend on its aid. “Hunger must not spread further in Gaza because aid projects are being blocked by Israel,” he said. Jordan, he added, stands firmly behind the two-state solution as “the only path to peaceful coexistence.”
