Vienna Concert Attack Plot Foiled, Man Jailed for 15 Years

Austria

A 21 year old Austrian man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for planning a jihadist attack on a Taylor Swift concert in Vienna during her Eras Tour in August 2024. The suspect, identified only as Beran A under Austrian privacy laws, was convicted of multiple terrorism related offenses, according to BBC News.

Authorities arrested him just days before three sold-out concerts were scheduled at Vienna’s Ernst Happel Stadium. The arrest came after a tip-off from the CIA, which alerted Austrian officials to the threat. In response, all three concerts were cancelled, disappointing nearly 200,000 fans who had been eagerly waiting for the performances.

Prosecutors said Beran A had become radicalized and pledged allegiance to the Islamic State (IS). Although he attempted to obtain weapons, including a machine gun and a hand grenade, he was unsuccessful. Investigators believe the planned attack could have caused significant loss of life if it had not been stopped in time.

A court-appointed psychiatrist, Peter Hoffmann, testified that the man showed no signs of mental illness. He stated there was no psychiatric reason for his radicalization, suggesting the motivations were ideological rather than psychological.

The trial took place in Wiener Neustadt, south of Vienna. A second man, Arda K, a 21 year old from Slovakia, was also convicted. Although he was not directly involved in the concert plot, he was found guilty of links to Islamic State and sentenced to 12 years in prison.

Before the verdict, Beran A expressed regret in court. The jury then deliberated for several hours before delivering its decision.

Taylor Swift later spoke about the incident, describing it as a narrowly avoided tragedy. She said the situation brought her a “new sense of fear” and left her feeling guilty about the cancelled shows. However, she also expressed deep gratitude toward the authorities, saying their actions ensured that people were “grieving concerts and not lives.”
