DUBAI — A loud explosion that echoed across Dubai on Wednesday night sparked concern among residents, but local authorities later confirmed that the noise came from successful air defense interceptions, according to NDTV. The United Arab Emirates’ Defence Ministry said its military systems had neutralized incoming missile and drone threats launched from Iran.
“Authorities in Dubai confirm that the sounds heard across parts of the city were the result of successful air defense interception operations,” the Dubai Media Office said in a statement posted on X, urging the public to rely only on official sources for information.
In a separate statement, the UAE’s Defence Ministry described the situation as “under control,” saying that its air defense systems were actively engaging missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles. “The sounds heard across the country are the result of ongoing interception operations,” the ministry added.
The explosions came shortly after UAE authorities issued safety alerts warning of possible missile and drone attacks in the region. According to Gulf News, residents across the country received phone messages assuring them that the situation was safe and that normal activities could resume, though citizens were advised to remain cautious and follow official instructions.
The heightened tension follows last week’s deadly incident in Abu Dhabi, where falling debris from intercepted missiles killed two people and injured three others. Local reports say at least 166 people have been injured nationwide since the attacks began, with injuries ranging from minor to severe. The victims include citizens and residents from more than two dozen countries, reflecting the UAE’s diverse population, among them nationals of Egypt, India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Ethiopia, and several African and Middle Eastern nations.
The Defence Ministry said it remains fully prepared to confront any future threats. “The UAE’s armed forces will respond firmly to any attempt to undermine the country’s security,” it stated. Officials emphasized their commitment to protecting the nation’s sovereignty, stability, and people.
As night fell, calm returned to Dubai. The skyline, momentarily lit by interception flashes, stood silent again, a reminder of how fragile normalcy can be in a region always balancing between peace and threat.
