Pakistan’s political tensions sharpened this week as former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party accused the government of denying him and his wife, Bushra Bibi, proper medical care and basic rights while in custody, according to NDTV.
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) said both Khan and his wife are being deprived of access to their personal doctors and are not allowed to meet family members or party colleagues. Khan, who has been in jail since August 2023 in multiple cases, is reportedly suffering from an eye condition that has not fully healed over the past four months.
Bushra Bibi, who was initially under house arrest, has been in prison since May 2024.
At a press conference in Peshawar, PTI leader and provincial minister Shafi Jan claimed the couple was taken to a hospital late at night for treatment, in what he described as a violation of jail rules. He said the medical visit lasted around three hours, but no official medical report was shared with the family or party.
Jan also warned that restricting access to Khan could be a breach of court orders, raising concerns about possible contempt of court.
The PTI has demanded that both Khan and Bushra Bibi be allowed to consult their personal physicians and called for their immediate transfer to a private hospital for a full medical check-up.
The allegations add to growing concerns among Khan’s supporters about his treatment in prison. The government has not yet publicly responded to these latest claims.
The case continues to draw national attention as Pakistan faces ongoing political uncertainty surrounding its former prime minister.
