His campaign gained ground as Australians, unsettled by former U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade threats, turned toward Albanese’s message of stability and homegrown values. “We do not seek our inspiration from overseas,” Albanese declared in his victory speech. “We find it right here in our people.”
During his first term, Albanese strengthened ties with the United States, committing A$368 billion ($232 billion) to the AUKUS security pact, including nuclear-powered submarines with the U.S. and U.K. He also reopened dialogue with China, calling the relationship “complex,” but vital due to trade ties.
A man shaped by hardship, Albanese grew up in public housing with a single mother on a disability pension. His working-class roots and quiet determination have earned him the trust of many. “Kindness isn’t weakness,” he once said. “I’ve been capable of making tough decisions.”
