NEW DELHI – Eleven people lost their lives in a tragic incident in Maharashtra’s Jalgaon district on Wednesday after false fire rumors on a moving train prompted passengers to jump off, only to be struck by another train traveling in the opposite direction.
The accident occurred roughly 400 kilometers (250 miles) from Mumbai, India’s financial hub, on a stretch of the railway notorious for its heavy traffic. Ayush Prasad, a senior official in Jalgaon, confirmed, “Eleven people have died, and about five others are undergoing treatment.”
The sequence of events began when someone pulled the “alarm chain” on a Mumbai-bound train, triggering panic among passengers. According to a spokesperson for Indian Railways, several passengers disembarked from the halted train, unaware of the oncoming train on the adjacent track. The alarm about a fire on board remains unverified.
India’s Interior Minister Amit Shah conveyed his condolences, stating, “My deepest sympathies to the families of those who lost their lives in this accident.” Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis echoed the sentiment, calling the incident “deeply disturbing” and expressing grief on the social media platform X.
This disaster underscores the challenges facing India’s rail network, one of the largest and busiest in the world, carrying millions daily. Although the government has initiated a $30 billion modernization project to improve safety and efficiency, incidents like these highlight lingering vulnerabilities.
According to official data, India recorded an average of 20,000 rail-related fatalities annually between 2017 and 2021, often attributed to overcrowding, antiquated infrastructure, and human error. The Jalgaon tragedy comes after a devastating 2023 collision in Odisha, where nearly 300 people died when a passenger train derailed and struck another train.
While the modernization efforts have reportedly reduced the number of accidents over time, this incident reflects the pressing need for further safety measures, especially to prevent panic-induced tragedies. Investigations into the cause of the false fire alarm are underway, with authorities pledging to enhance passenger awareness and operational safeguards to prevent such incidents in the future.
