The Austrian town of Neunkirchen is heading toward new municipal elections after an extraordinary political collapse that prompted the Social Democratic Party (SPÖ) and the Greens to vacate all their seats on the city council. Their collective resignation, announced on Facebook, clears the path for the fresh vote many residents had been demanding. The local Freedom Party (FPÖ) has also thrown its support behind the move.
At a Monday press conference, SPÖ officials described a city in persistent turmoil since the January election, saying the political landscape has transformed beyond recognition. They pointed to a string of crises: a split within the FPÖ, the resignation of three People’s Party (ÖVP) council members, and the abrupt departure of Mayor Klaudia Osztovics. The instability continued when the ÖVP’s first replacement mayoral candidate who lacked council experience, pulled out within a week. A second candidate, an experienced ÖVP city councilor, soon withdrew as well.
“Less than a year after the election, the situation now looks nothing like it did when voters cast their ballots,” the SPÖ said, describing a governing environment marked by confusion and dysfunction.
Adding to the unrest is a controversial fiscal consolidation plan pushed by the city leadership. The SPÖ criticized the proposal for imposing steep fee hikes and cutting longstanding discounts, measures they argue will place an unfair burden on Neunkirchen residents. They also condemned what they called a series of poor decisions in kindergarten operations and the city’s music school, along with the cancellation of popular community events instead of exploring more targeted budget cuts.
Tensions heightened further after the newspaper Heute reported alleged irregularities in the city’s financial accounts, raising new questions about oversight and management.
“We will not continue to support this system,” the SPÖ said in its statement. “We are giving the people the chance to decide what comes next.”
The mass resignations mark one of the most dramatic episodes in Neunkirchen’s recent political history and set the stage for a pivotal election that could redefine the town’s leadership.
