A wave of Ukrainian attacks tore through several Russian regions this week, killing at least eight people, some in areas lying hundreds of kilometers from the front line, according to Russian authorities.
The strikes mark the latest escalation in a grim tit-for-tat exchange between Moscow and Kyiv, as U.S.-brokered talks to end the war remain stalled with little sign of progress, according to Hurriyet Daily News. Ukraine, which has consistently denied targeting civilians, insists its strikes are a justified response to Russia’s relentless bombardment of Ukrainian territory and a calculated effort to push Moscow back to the negotiating table.
In Russia’s Belgorod region, which borders Ukraine, shelling claimed three lives. Farther afield, in the Saratov region near Kazakhstan, a drone attack killed two more people, regional officials reported.
Perhaps the most haunting incident occurred in Udmurtia, more than 1,000 kilometers from the front line, where a drone strike hit a car and killed three people. Acting governor Olga Abramova, writing on Telegram, did not hide her anguish. “This act is monstrous in its senselessness,” she wrote, adding that the victims “were definitely not a military target.”
Her words captured a growing unease in Russia that the war, once confined largely to border regions, is now reaching deep into the country’s interior, striking ordinary lives far removed from any battlefield.
Russia’s defence ministry said its air defence systems intercepted 635 Ukrainian drones overnight, underscoring the sheer scale of the aerial campaign now unfolding nightly across Russian skies.
As both sides trade blows with no diplomatic breakthrough in sight, civilians on both fronts continue to bear the heaviest cost of a war that shows little sign of slowing down.
