In the latest case highlighting growing concerns over youth crime in Vienna, three teenagers were caught by police after breaking into a newspaper stand in the city’s 15th district, Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus. The young suspects managed to steal only €13.03, but the incident has added to public worries about increasing juvenile offenses, reported by 5 Minutes Newsweb.
The crime took place early on the morning of April 21, 2025. A local resident, disturbed by a loud noise outside, looked out of his window and saw several teenagers trying to break into a newspaper vending machine. He quickly called the police as the teens fled with a small amount of coins.
Vienna’s Fünfhaus police responded fast and found the suspects shortly after on Clementinengasse. The group included two 14-year-olds—one with both Syrian and Austrian citizenship—and a 15-year-old from Iran. One of the boys tried to run but was quickly caught by officers.
Police recovered the broken coin box from the newspaper stand and collected €13.03 in small change. The teens were taken to the police station for questioning and later released under supervision. They are now under investigation for theft, and their cases have been handed over to the public prosecutor.
Though the amount stolen was small, the event has sparked conversations about the rising number of crimes committed by young people in Vienna. Residents and authorities are now more concerned about how to prevent such incidents and guide teens away from criminal behavior.
Vienna police say they are keeping a close watch on youth crime patterns and are working with schools and local communities to find long-term solutions. This recent theft serves as a reminder that even minor crimes can have serious consequences—and that preventing youth crime needs to be a top priority for the city.
