China and Afghanistan Near Trade Milestone via Wakhan Route Amid Tense Pakistan Ties

International

In a significant development for regional commerce, China has pledged to begin trade with Afghanistan through the Wakhan Corridor once the road construction is completed, reported by Tolonews. This comes at a time when relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan are growing increasingly strained, making alternative trade routes more vital than ever for Afghanistan’s economy.

Local officials in Afghanistan’s Badakhshan province confirmed that the second phase of the Wakhan road project is nearly finished. The road, which stretches to the Chinese border where barbed wire fences stand, is now connected and is expected to be operational within the next two months.

Badakhshan Governor Mohammad Ayoub Khalid said, “We have reached the border. The connection is made, and work continues to improve the road. It will soon be ready for use.” His colleague, Khan Mohammad, head of the governor’s office, added that China’s ambassador has assured them that trade will begin immediately after the road opens.

This project carries major economic significance for Afghanistan. The Wakhan Corridor offers a shorter and more direct route to China, especially for exports like fresh and dried fruits. Afghan businessman Saleh Mohammad Alokozai, based in China, noted that this new route could reduce market prices in Afghanistan by cutting transportation time and costs.

As political tensions with Pakistan grow due to border clashes and diplomatic disputes, Afghanistan is seeking to strengthen its ties with other neighboring countries. The Wakhan route represents not only a new trade path but also a symbol of hope for a more independent and resilient Afghan economy.

Officials from the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan have also shared that trade and security facilities near the Chinese border are almost complete. They believe that once the route is open, it will boost trade, create jobs, and bring in much-needed revenue.

With the road nearing completion and both nations showing commitment, the Wakhan Corridor could soon transform into a key economic gateway between China and Afghanistan — offering a fresh chapter in regional trade cooperation amid shifting alliances.
