Vienna Teenager Injures Five People, Including Two Police Officers

A violent street incident in Vienna on Sunday evening left five people injured, including two police officers, after an 18 year old boy attacked several individuals and resisted arrest in the city’s Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus district, according to Kurier.

According to police, the incident took place around 7 p.m. on Sechshauser Straße. The young man reportedly encountered a 17 year old acquaintance who was walking with his 37 year old mother. Witnesses said the 18 year old suddenly began shouting insults at the pair before the situation quickly turned violent.

Police stated that the suspect struck the woman in the face, injuring her upper lip. A fight then broke out between the two teenagers in the middle of the street, drawing the attention of passersby.

A 46 year old man attempted to calm the situation and separate those involved, but he was allegedly thrown to the ground by the attacker. He suffered injuries to his wrists and abrasions. The 17 year old also sustained wrist injuries and minor wounds during the confrontation.

Authorities believe the two teenagers knew each other from Vienna’s drug scene, although further details about their relationship have not been released.

When police officers arrived at the scene, the 18 year old reportedly resisted arrest and could only be detained through the use of physical force. During the struggle, two officers were injured badly enough that they could no longer continue their duties, police spokesperson Irina Steirer said on Monday.

Emergency medical teams from Vienna’s professional rescue service treated all five injured people at the scene. Police confirmed that none of the victims suffered serious injuries such as broken bones.

The suspect, an 18 year old Austrian citizen, now faces charges of physical harm and resisting state authority.

The incident has once again raised concerns about rising street violence in parts of Vienna, where police have increasingly dealt with disturbances linked to youth crime and drug related conflicts.
