Srinagar: The Kashmir Valley remains under a thick blanket of snow as heavy snowfall and intermittent rain on Friday caused significant disruptions. All flights to and from Srinagar International Airport were cancelled due to continuous snowfall and extremely low visibility, officials confirmed.
The train service connecting the valley was restored in the afternoon after railway staff cleared the snow-laden tracks, offering some relief to commuters. However, the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway remained closed, leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded between the Pir Panjal tunnel and Srinagar city.
Authorities worked tirelessly throughout the day to address the situation. District officials from Kulgam and Anantnag, including Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs), actively participated in relief operations. They assisted in pushing stranded vehicles, distributing water, and attending to the needs of tourists and locals stuck on the highway.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah convened high-level meetings to ensure quick restoration of essential services. Focus was placed on resuming electric power supply, clearing major roads, and equipping medical facilities to handle emergencies triggered by the unprecedented snowfall. District administrations deployed snow clearance machines to reopen roads linking various towns and districts, prioritizing access to district headquarters.
While the harsh weather has caused logistical challenges, the snowfall has brought some positive developments. After a four-month-long dry spell, the heavy snowfall has replenished vital water reservoirs in the region. These reservoirs feed rivers, streams, springs, lakes, and other water bodies that sustain life in Jammu and Kashmir during the summer months.
The current weather conditions have created a blend of difficulties and optimism. While authorities continue their efforts to restore normalcy, the snow has been welcomed for its long-term benefits to the region’s water resources and ecosystem.
As the situation develops, residents are urged to stay updated through official channels and exercise caution during travel.
