Blackout in Vienna – customers waved through without paying

According to the Newspaper ” Heute”: Power outage in several districts of Vienna, especially Favoriten.
In the heat there was no more air conditioning, traffic lights and garage doors remained closed.

There were power cuts in several districts of Vienna on Monday evening. The disruption mainly affected Vienna-Favoriten, where the blackout stretched from Inzersdorfer Straße to Landgutgasse.

‘Heute’ readers reported that Vienna’s grids were tripped on large scale, as not only traffic lights were paralysed, but the blackout also locked car owners out of their garages, flats and offices had to work without air conditioning.

Strange scenes unfolded in the supermarkets. In one Hofer shop everything was dark, even the conveyor belts at the checkouts were at a standstill. Staff were still trying to collect payments at the battery-operated tills – but in the end, customers were simply waved through with their purchases without paying.

According to the Wiener Netze fault overview, the partial outage occurred at around 18:34. Further regional outages were reported in Vienna’s Donaustadt district and in Floridsdorf. There are currently interruptions to the power supply in parts of the Wiener Netze supply area, it stated’.

Wiener Netze also announced: ‘Please note that in the event of a power outage, outages can also be expected in neighbouring areas. We are not yet able to provide any specific information on the causes and duration of the disruption.’
