Europe is finding itself pulled into the chaos of a widening conflict as the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran sparks retaliatory attacks across the Middle East, according to Hurriyet Daily News. What began as a distant confrontation has quickly turned into a pressing challenge for European nations, forcing them to defend their military bases and rescue citizens trapped in war zones.
Although European leaders were not consulted before the U.S. and Israel launched their operation, they are now scrambling to cope with the fallout. The region at the center of the conflict holds vital importance for Europe as both a trade hub and home to thousands of Europeans living in cities like Beirut, Dubai, and Jerusalem.
Despite their reluctance to take sides, Britain, France, and Germany have pledged to work with the United States to halt Iran’s attacks. The U.K. has already permitted American forces to use British bases to strike Iranian missile and launch sites, edging the country closer to the conflict than most Europeans would like.
But the crisis has reached European soil as well. Over the weekend, a Shahed-type drone struck a U.K. air base in southern Cyprus, sparking alarm across the continent. Cyprus, which currently holds the presidency of the European Union, had to publicly clarify that it is not involved in the fighting.
In response, European allies have rushed military assets to the region. The U.K. is deploying helicopters with counter drone systems and the destroyer HMS Dragon. France has sent the frigate Languedoc, while Greece has committed four F-16 jets and two warships, including the Psara, equipped with the Greek-made Centauros anti-drone defense system.
During a visit to Nicosia on March 3, Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias reaffirmed his country’s commitment, declaring, “Greece is present and will continue to be present to assist in the defense of the Republic of Cyprus.”
As tensions rise and Europe takes defensive positions, the continent finds itself guarding not just its citizens abroad but its sense of peace at home.
