Trump Signals Fresh US-Iran Talks as Pakistan Emerges as Key Mediator

As tensions continue to simmer between Washington and Tehran, US President Donald Trump has indicated that fresh talks with Iran could resume within the next two days, with Pakistan increasingly likely to host the next round of negotiations, according to Dawn News.

Speaking to the New York Post on Tuesday, Trump suggested that Islamabad had become the preferred venue for renewed diplomacy. He praised Pakistan’s military leadership, saying the country had played a “fantastic” role in the peace efforts.

His remarks came after reports that US and Iranian negotiating teams may return to Pakistan’s capital later this week. The two sides had already held rare direct talks in Islamabad over the weekend, the highest level engagement between Washington and Tehran since 1979.

Although the talks ended without a formal agreement, they did not collapse, leaving the door open for further dialogue.

According to Pakistani officials, Islamabad has been in contact with both sides to determine the timing of the next meeting, which is expected over the weekend. A senior government official said Iran had responded positively to the proposal for a second round.

Pakistan has since intensified its diplomatic efforts, reaching out to key international partners including Britain, China, Turkiye, Saudi Arabia and Egypt. The central message has remained clear: the ceasefire must hold, and dialogue remains the only path to peace.

The current ceasefire, brokered on April 8 after weeks of confrontation, is due to expire on April 22. While it remains in place for now, its future appears uncertain.

Fresh concerns have emerged after the United States reportedly moved closer to enforcing a naval blockade of Iranian ports, a step Tehran has warned would violate the truce.

Pakistani leaders, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, have said that “full efforts” are underway to prevent a breakdown and extend the ceasefire. Diplomatic sources say mediators are now working to secure at least a 45 day extension while pushing both sides back to the negotiating table.

With time running short, Pakistan has positioned itself at the heart of one of the region’s most delicate peace efforts.
