Ships Attacked as Hormuz Strait Tensions Disrupt Global Shipping

Two commercial vessels were attacked in the Strait of Hormuz, maritime security agencies said Sunday, raising alarm along one of the world’s most critical oil shipping routes, according to Khaleej Times.

The incidents came hours after the global container shipping giant Maersk announced it was suspending all ship movements through the narrow waterway “until further notice,” citing safety concerns for crews and cargo. The Danish company said the decision was taken after escalating regional threats.

The strait, a strategic channel between the Iran and Oman coasts, is one of the busiest energy corridors on Earth, carrying a large share of global oil and gas shipments. Any disruption there can quickly ripple through world markets.

According to reports carried by Agence France-Presse, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards had declared the waterway closed shortly before the attacks. Omani state media later said an oil tanker off Oman’s coast had been targeted, leaving four crew members injured.

Shipping companies and naval monitors are now assessing risks in the area, where tensions have repeatedly flared in recent years. Commercial vessels in the Gulf region often rely on military escorts or coordinated passage schedules when threats rise.

For seafarers aboard the targeted ships, the danger was immediate. Maritime incidents in the strait often unfold with little warning, placing crews in sudden peril far from shore. Industry officials said safeguarding sailors remains the overriding priority as shipping lines reconsider routes and delays grow.

The attacks deepen fears that regional confrontation could spill into global trade arteries. Even brief closures in the Strait of Hormuz can disrupt energy supplies, push up fuel prices, and strain already fragile supply chains.

As investigations continue, the world’s shipping lanes and the sailors who navigate them, face renewed uncertainty in waters long shadowed by geopolitical rivalry. __Photo Courtesy X
