In the quiet outskirts of Bannu, a district surrounded by the rugged hills of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, terror returned with devastating force on the night of May 9, 2026, according to Dawn News. What began as a calm evening ended in bloodshed when militants launched one of the deadliest recent attacks on police forces in northwestern Pakistan.
The target was the Fateh Khel police post, a small checkpoint that stood as a frontline defense against rising militancy in the region. According to officials, attackers rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into the post, triggering a massive blast that shook nearby neighborhoods and lit up the night sky. Moments later, heavy gunfire erupted from several directions while quadcopters hovered overhead, creating panic and confusion among officers and residents alike.
Of the 18 police personnel stationed at the checkpoint, 15 were martyred in the assault. Three others suffered injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals after rescue teams arrived at the scene. The explosion completely destroyed the police post, reduced an armored vehicle to wreckage, and damaged surrounding buildings. Communication lines were briefly cut off, complicating rescue operations during the critical first hours after the attack.
By Sunday morning, Rescue 1122 teams had recovered bodies and survivors from beneath the debris. Authorities declared an emergency in local hospitals as security forces sealed off the area and launched search operations across Bannu. Additional checkpoints were established throughout the city to prevent further violence.
The attack was later claimed by a militant alliance linked to banned extremist groups operating in the region. The tragedy once again highlighted the growing security challenges facing Pakistan, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where violence has surged in recent months.
As families mourned their loved ones, local residents gathered in solidarity with the police, offering prayers and support.
