In a significant development, Pakistan’s military courts have convicted 60 additional individuals, including Hassan Niazi, the nephew of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former Prime Minister Imran Khan, in connection with the May 9 unrest. The verdicts were announced by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) on Thursday, highlighting the conclusion of rigorous legal proceedings against those involved in the violent incidents.
The Field General Court Martial (FGCM), operating under the directives of the Supreme Court, finalized these punishments after thoroughly examining all evidence. The military media wing emphasized that the trials adhered strictly to the principles of justice, ensuring all convicts were afforded their constitutional rights, including due process and legal representation.
Among the convicted is Hassan Niazi, son of Hafizullah Niazi, who received a 10-year sentence of rigorous imprisonment for his role in the attack on Jinnah House. The violent events of May 9, which erupted following Imran Khan’s arrest earlier this year, led to widespread unrest, targeting public and military properties, including sensitive installations.
According to the ISPR, the trials for all individuals under military custody have now been concluded under applicable laws. The convicts retain the right to appeal and pursue other legal remedies as outlined in the Constitution and relevant statutes.
The May 9 violence marked a turning point in Pakistan’s recent political and social history, with authorities vowing to take stringent measures to uphold the rule of law and prevent such incidents in the future. The ISPR reiterated the collective resolve of the nation, government, and armed forces to ensure justice and preserve the state’s authority against acts of lawlessness.
This announcement underscores Pakistan’s commitment to maintaining stability and addressing threats to its governance and security. The military courts’ verdicts reflect a broader effort to deter unrest while adhering to judicial standards.
