London Marchers Rally for Palestine on Nakba Anniversary

Tens of thousands of people marched through central London on Saturday to mark the 78th anniversary of Nakba Day, a solemn occasion remembered by Palestinians as the “catastrophe” that led to the loss of their homeland in 1948, according to Mehr News Agency.

Waving Palestinian flags and carrying banners that read “Free Palestine,” protesters filled the streets with chants calling for justice, freedom, and the right of Palestinians to return to their homes. The march came during a time of deep sorrow and anger as the war in Gaza continues to displace and devastate millions of lives.

Nakba Day remembers the forced displacement of more than 750,000 Palestinians during the creation of Israel in 1948. Historians say that between 1947 and 1949, hundreds of Palestinian towns and villages were emptied or destroyed as armed Zionist groups took control of large areas of land. Many families fled in fear, while others were driven from their homes. Today, generations of Palestinians still live as refugees in Gaza, the occupied West Bank, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria.

The demonstration in London was marked by both passion and heavy security. More than 4,000 police officers were deployed across the city in one of the largest security operations seen in recent years. Authorities used drones, mounted police, dogs, and facial recognition technology to monitor the crowds and keep rival groups apart.

For many protesters, this year’s march carried special urgency. It was the third Nakba anniversary observed since the start of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza in October 2023. Demonstrators repeatedly condemned what they described as war crimes in Gaza and voiced support for Palestinian civilians enduring displacement, hunger, and violence.

Despite the tense atmosphere, the march remained largely peaceful, becoming a powerful display of solidarity and remembrance in the heart of London.__Photo Courtesy MNA
