Italy is seeking to calm tensions with the United States after President Donald Trump reignited a personal dispute with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, choosing restraint over confrontation as both leaders prepare to meet at a NATO summit in Ankara, according to Reuters.
The disagreement marks a shift in what was once seen as a close political relationship. Meloni, who had openly supported Trump and even attended his 2025 inauguration, found herself at odds with him last month after he claimed she had “begged” for a photo at a G7 summit. Meloni strongly denied the accusation, calling it untrue.
Tensions flared again when Trump posted an image of Meloni on social media with the caption “restraining order needed,” drawing criticism and raising concerns about diplomatic strain between the two allies.
Despite the remarks, Italy’s government has made clear it will not escalate the situation. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said Rome intends to maintain stable relations with Washington regardless of political disagreements. “Trump speaks for himself,” Tajani said, noting that the US president is known for provocative statements, especially online.
Other senior officials echoed the same message, emphasizing continuity in diplomatic ties. A source close to Meloni suggested she would handle the encounter with composure, likely greeting Trump politely rather than responding publicly.
The dispute also reflects deeper differences that have emerged in recent months. Meloni had earlier criticized Trump for attacking Pope Leo over his stance on the Iran conflict, prompting Trump to question her political courage.
While the exchange has drawn strong reactions in Italy, including criticism from opposition parties and media satire, the government has signaled a clear intention to move forward without further confrontation.
As NATO leaders gather, Italy appears determined to keep the focus on alliance unity rather than personal conflict, even as tensions between two prominent figures linger in the background.
