NEW YORK — Iran condemned the United Nations Security Council’s failure to respond to recent Israeli and US military strikes targeting its nuclear facilities, accusing the global body of dangerous double standards, reported by Tasnim News Agency.
Kazem Gharibabadi, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs, addressed representatives from over 110 UN member states during a briefing in New York on Monday. He labeled Israel as the main source of instability in the Middle East, citing thousands of terrorist acts and the displacement of millions of Palestinians over the past eight decades.
Gharibabadi emphasized that Iran’s nuclear program remains peaceful and under strict International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) oversight, contrasting it with Israel’s undeclared nuclear arsenal, which operates outside international treaties. “Where is the alleged Iranian bomb?” he questioned, denouncing years of accusations as unfounded.
Despite widespread condemnation of the strikes by many countries, Gharibabadi criticized the silence and inaction of key institutions, including three European states, the Security Council, the IAEA Board of Governors, and its Director General. “If the Security Council cannot uphold its mandate, who will maintain global peace and security?” he asked.
Calling the attacks “unprecedented and grave crimes,” the Iranian diplomat warned that such selective enforcement risks encouraging impunity, particularly for nuclear-armed states outside the Non-Proliferation Treaty. He urged the international community to reject double standards and respect Iran’s legitimate right to peaceful nuclear development and self-defense.
The briefing ended with calls to uphold the UN Charter and end political bias, underscoring Tehran’s intent to highlight what it views as ongoing aggression masked by diplomatic silence.
