German Doctor Jailed for Killing 15 Patients

A Berlin court has sentenced a palliative care doctor to life in prison for the murder of 15 patients, in a case that has shocked Germany and raised fears that more victims may yet be uncovered, according to BBC News.

The 41-year-old doctor, identified as Johannes M. under German privacy laws, was found guilty of killing 12 women and three men between September 2021 and July 2024. His patients, aged between 25 and 94, were seriously ill but not believed to be close to death.

Prosecutors told the court that during home visits, the doctor secretly administered lethal doses of medication without consent. In some cases, he allegedly set fires in an attempt to hide evidence of the killings.

The case took an even darker turn shortly before his arrest in July 2024, when he is said to have killed two patients on the same day first a 75 year old man, and hours later a 76 year old woman. Authorities said he tried, but failed, to set fire to the woman’s home.

For most of the year-long trial, the doctor remained silent. But in a late confession, he admitted to killing 12 patients, claiming he believed he was ending their suffering. He apologized in court, saying he thought his actions were “the best thing for everyone.”

Investigators now suspect the true scale of the crimes could be far greater. Prosecutors are examining 76 additional cases, raising the possibility that this could become one of the largest serial murder cases in modern German history.

In court, grieving families rejected any suggestion of mercy. Relatives described loved ones who still had plans and hope for the future.

The court ruled the doctor’s guilt was particularly severe, ordering not only life imprisonment but also preventive detention and a lifetime ban from practicing medicine.
