Controversial remarks made by Austrian Freedom Party (FPÖ) Members of Parliament Harald Stefan and Markus Tschank at a roundtable on January 8th have triggered a political firestorm. The comments, which included derogatory statements about the Austrian People’s Party (ÖVP), immigrants, and the European Union, alongside shocking praise for the Taliban regime in Afghanistan, have been widely condemned by opposition parties.
SPÖ General Secretary Klaus Seltenheim denounced the remarks as revealing the FPÖ’s “true face of hate and aggression,” accusing the party of exploiting private settings to promote divisive rhetoric. He urged FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl and ÖVP leader Karl Nehammer to take a clear stance, declaring that their silence would imply complicity.
