Austrian Chancellor Travels to India with Big Hopes for Business and Partnership

Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker is set to travel to India next Tuesday for a three-day official visit aimed at strengthening ties between the two nations in business, science, and long-term strategic cooperation. The visit comes only months after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s trip to Vienna in July 2024, underlining the growing warmth in relations between Austria and India.

During his stay in New Delhi, Stocker will hold talks with Prime Minister Modi and is also expected to meet Indian President Draupadi Murmu. The visit carries high expectations, particularly in the fields of trade, industry, technology, and research, as Austria looks to deepen its presence in one of the world’s fastest-growing economies.

Stocker will be accompanied by a strong delegation that includes Economy Minister Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer, senior officials from the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber, more than 60 representatives from leading Austrian companies, and top university leaders. Major Austrian firms such as Wienerberger, ANDRITZ HYDRO, Doppelmayr, Plasser & Theurer, and AVL List are among those taking part, reflecting the importance Vienna places on this mission.

For Austria, India represents a vital global partner beyond the European Union. As the world’s largest democracy and a country of more than 1.4 billion people, India continues to attract international attention with economic growth close to 7 percent and major investments in infrastructure, industry, and advanced technology.

Austrian businesses have already begun to tap into this momentum. Around 170 Austrian companies are active in India, while exports have shown strong growth in recent years. Officials say the expected EU-India free trade agreement could further boost investment, reduce trade barriers, and open new opportunities for joint ventures.

A major highlight of the visit will be the India-Austria Business Summit, where business leaders from both countries are expected to explore partnerships and concrete projects. Several agreements and memorandums of understanding are also likely to be signed.

Calling the visit highly significant, Chancellor Stocker said strong international partnerships are essential in a time of global economic uncertainty. Economy Minister Hattmannsdorfer added that India offers enormous opportunities for Austrian exporters, particularly in machinery, industrial technology, and engineering, sectors in which Austria has long-standing expertise.

The visit is being seen as both an economic mission and a diplomatic step toward building a stronger and more resilient partnership between Vienna and New Delhi.
