Yemen’s Prime Minister Resigns Amid Political Struggles

International

Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak, the Prime Minister of Yemen’s internationally recognized government, announced his resignation on Saturday, May 3, 2025. In a statement, he cited ongoing political challenges, including his inability to implement necessary reforms and a Cabinet reshuffle, reported by Arab News.

Bin Mubarak, who assumed office in February 2024, faced significant obstacles during his tenure. His efforts to dismiss 12 ministers were reportedly blocked by Rashad Al-Alimi, head of Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council, leading to internal disputes.

The resignation underscores the fragility of Yemen’s anti-Houthi alliance, which remains divided between factions backed by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

Yemen has been embroiled in a civil war since 2014, when Houthi rebels seized the capital, Sanaa, prompting a Saudi-led military intervention. The conflict has resulted in over 150,000 deaths and one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.

Following Bin Mubarak’s resignation, Finance Minister Salem Saleh Bin Braik is expected to be appointed as the new Prime Minister.

The change in leadership comes amid intensified U.S. military actions against Houthi targets, aiming to deter attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea.

As Yemen continues to face economic collapse, widespread poverty, and political instability, the new leadership will confront significant challenges in steering the nation toward peace and recovery.
