We Divided the World: Iran Claims Diplomatic Victory in UN Sanctions Row

TEHRAN — Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said Thursday that the United States has been compelled to acknowledge Iran’s diplomatic success in dividing global opinion over the “snapback” sanctions dispute at the United Nations Security Council, according to Tasnim News Agency.

Speaking at Bu-Ali Sina University in Hamedan, Araqchi described how Tehran’s resistance to Washington’s efforts to reimpose international sanctions in recent years created an unprecedented split within the global community.

“Even the Americans themselves admitted that Iran managed to divide the world into two parts,” Araqchi said. “The majority of countries stood with Iran’s position, while only a small minority sided with the U.S. and its Western allies.”

The foreign minister pointed to what he called a “historic moment” at the Security Council, when two permanent members—widely understood to be Russia and China publicly declared they would not comply with U.N. resolutions sought by Washington. Such defiance, Araqchi said, underscored the erosion of U.S. dominance in global diplomacy.

He argued that the ability to generate international legitimacy and rally global support in the face of U.S. pressure represents a new form of deterrence for Iran. “When a country can isolate aggressors and mobilize global consensus in its favor, it shows that its diplomacy and strategic policies are moving effectively toward strengthening its deterrent power,” Araqchi added.

The “snapback” dispute refers to the mechanism under the 2015 nuclear deal allowing the reimposition of U.N. sanctions if Iran violates the accord. The U.S. attempted to trigger the mechanism in 2020 after withdrawing from the deal in 2018; an effort rejected by most Security Council members at the time.

Araqchi’s remarks highlight Tehran’s continued view that its diplomatic strategy has shifted global dynamics in its favor despite Western pressure.
