VIENNA — Just hours after a violent stabbing in Vienna’s Favoriten district left two men critically injured, another knife attack has shaken the Austrian capital, deepening public concern over a wave of violence that has unsettled the city, according to Kronen Zeitung.
The latest incident occurred during the night in the Leopoldstadt district, where what began as a dispute among young men quickly escalated into a brutal act of violence. By the time the confrontation had ended, four people had been wounded, and one young man was left battling for his life in hospital.
According to preliminary information released by Vienna police, a 19 year old Syrian citizen allegedly drew a folding knife during an argument on Taborstraße and attacked four men aged between 18 and 22. Witnesses reported scenes of confusion and panic as the violence unfolded on the street.
Among the victims, a 21 year old man suffered severe stab wounds to the upper body. Doctors are fighting to save his life, and authorities say he remains in critical condition. The three other victims also sustained injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment.
Police officers from the Praterstern station were on routine patrol when they became aware of the disturbance. Initial reports suggested a street fight, but when officers arrived, they discovered a far more serious situation involving multiple stabbing victims. Reinforcements from the city police commands of Innere Stadt and Brigittenau were immediately dispatched to secure the area and assist with the emergency response.
The suspected attacker was arrested at the scene without resistance. Investigators also recovered the knife believed to have been used in the assault, which has been taken into evidence.
Paramedics from Vienna’s emergency medical service provided urgent treatment to the injured men before transporting them to nearby hospitals. Their swift response is believed to have been crucial in stabilizing the most seriously wounded victim.
Authorities have not yet determined what triggered the confrontation. Investigators are now interviewing witnesses, examining evidence, and working to establish the sequence of events that led to the attack.
The case has been handed over to the Vienna State Criminal Police Office’s Center/East branch, which is leading the investigation. As detectives continue their work, the incident has once again focused attention on public safety in Vienna. Coming so soon after another major stabbing, the attack has left many residents concerned and searching for answers as the city grapples with a troubling surge in violent incidents.
Police have urged anyone with information about the events leading up to the attack to come forward as the investigation continues.
