Iran has expressed strong support for Oman after former US President Donald Trump threatened military action over control of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes, according to Fars News Agency.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baqaei said Tehran stands in solidarity with Muscat and condemned what he described as dangerous and unlawful threats made by American officials. His remarks came after Trump warned that he would “blow up” Oman if the Gulf nation cooperated with Iran in managing the strategic waterway.
Speaking on Thursday, Baqaei said threatening a United Nations member state that has long played a peaceful and constructive role in the region was a serious violation of international law. He praised Oman for its efforts in diplomacy and mediation over the years, saying the country has consistently worked to maintain peace and stability in the Middle East.
“Such threats are a dangerous sign of growing lawlessness and bullying in international relations,” Baqaei said.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most sensitive maritime routes, carrying a large share of global oil and gas exports. On Wednesday, Trump claimed that the waterway would remain “open to everybody” under American supervision.
Tensions in the region have risen sharply since the outbreak of conflict between Iran, the United States, and Israel earlier this year. Iran restricted transit through the Strait of Hormuz after the war began in late February. Although a Pakistan-brokered ceasefire was reached in early April, only selected vessels are currently allowed to pass through the strategic route.
Baqaei also accused the United States of carrying out military raids near the southern Iranian port city of Bandar Abbas. He described the attacks as a clear violation of Iran’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, adding that the actions breached international law and the United Nations Charter.
The Iranian spokesperson further claimed that the United States had continued violating the ceasefire through attacks on commercial shipping and aerial operations in southern Iran.
He stressed that Iran would take all necessary steps to defend its sovereignty and national security under Article 51 of the UN Charter, signaling that tensions in the Gulf region remain dangerously high.
