WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump has given Hamas just days to respond to his Gaza peace proposal, warning of severe consequences if the group refuses.
Speaking to reporters before leaving the White House on Friday, Trump said Hamas has “three or four days” to decide whether to accept the plan. “Hamas is either going to be doing it or not, and if it’s not, it’s going to be a very sad end,” he cautioned.
When asked if negotiations might still be possible, Trump signaled little flexibility. “Not much,” he said, underscoring the administration’s hard line.
The plan, which the White House has promoted as a path toward stability in Gaza, has faced skepticism from regional actors and rights groups who argue it heavily favors Israeli interests. Hamas has not issued a formal response.
Trump’s remarks raise the stakes in a conflict that has already claimed thousands of lives and displaced many more. By tying a tight deadline to the peace initiative, the president appears to be pressing Hamas into a corner, a gamble that could either yield a breakthrough or trigger further escalation.
