Russia Insists UN Veto Power Is Cornerstone of Global Balance

Russia has doubled down on defending the United Nations Security Council’s veto power, casting it not as a privilege but as a safeguard for balance in global decision-making.

Kirill Logvinov, director of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s Department of International Organizations, told reporters that Moscow “firmly opposes” any attempt to weaken or dilute the authority of the Council’s five permanent members.

“We firmly oppose any changes to the rights of the Security Council’s permanent members or extending them to potential future permanent members,” Logvinov said, as reported by TASS. “The veto is not a privilege or a means for pressure, but a key component in crafting balanced and appropriate decisions within the Security Council.”

The Russian diplomat argued that the mechanism prevents unilateral moves, compels compromise, and ensures no single vision is imposed against the will of others. “This mechanism blocks the advancement of unilateral approaches in the UNSC, helps to reach compromises, and avoids steps that are categorically unacceptable to others,” he added.

Moscow’s defense of the veto comes amid renewed debates over reforming the Security Council, with critics pointing to repeated deadlocks on crises ranging from Ukraine to Gaza. While advocates for reform argue the veto has paralyzed the Council, Russia insists it remains essential to maintaining what it calls “a balanced system” that reflects the interests of all major powers.

For Russia, the veto is not just a tool of influence but a cornerstone of the post-World War II order — a line it says must not be crossed.
