According to BBC News, Russian President Vladimir Putin has floated the idea of placing Ukraine under temporary United Nations control to elect what he claims would be a more “competent” government. This proposal, however, has been swiftly dismissed by Kyiv, with Ukrainian officials branding it as an absurd ploy to stall peace negotiations.
Putin’s remarks come amid ongoing efforts by the United States to broker a ceasefire in the brutal war, now dragging into its fourth year. While a limited truce was reportedly agreed upon in the Black Sea, Russia soon presented demands—including the lifting of Western sanctions—raising concerns that Moscow seeks to undermine peace efforts rather than embrace them.
Speaking from the icy reaches of Murmansk aboard a nuclear-powered submarine, Putin suggested that international intervention could help Ukraine elect a new government and restart peace talks. He argued that President Volodymyr Zelensky, whose term has been extended due to martial law, lacks legitimacy. However, critics see this as a calculated maneuver to sow discord and weaken Ukraine’s leadership.
The White House firmly rejected Putin’s notion, stating that Ukraine’s governance is determined by its constitution and its people. Meanwhile, fighting rages on, with Russia claiming battlefield advantages, though its territorial gains remain minimal.
As world leaders gathered in Paris to reaffirm their support for Kyiv, Putin’s proposal was met with skepticism. Many see it as yet another attempt to redraw Ukraine’s political landscape in Moscow’s favor, while war-weary Ukrainians brace for what lies ahead.
