Putin Calls Palestinian Statehood a “Matter of Principle” as Russia and UAE Deepen Strategic Ties

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday reaffirmed Moscow’s long-standing support for the establishment of a Palestinian state, describing it as “a matter of principle” and a key prerequisite for achieving lasting peace and stability in the Middle East, according to Anadolu.

Speaking at the Kremlin during talks with United Arab Emirates President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Putin emphasized that a two state solution where a sovereign Palestinian state exists alongside Israel in peace and security, remains essential to resolving the protracted Palestinian-Israeli conflict. He noted that both leaders had repeatedly discussed the crisis and were coordinating efforts to improve the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza.

“This approach alone can ensure a sustainable settlement and long-term stability in the region,” Putin said, underlining Russia’s continued diplomatic engagement on the issue.

The Russian leader also addressed escalating tensions surrounding Iran, stating that Moscow was closely monitoring developments following recent threats of military action by former US President Donald Trump. His remarks highlighted Russia’s concern over rising regional instability and the potential consequences of further confrontation.

During the meeting, Putin praised the UAE’s growing role as a mediator in international conflicts, particularly its efforts related to the war in Ukraine. He commended Abu Dhabi for facilitating prisoner exchanges and hosting recent US-mediated talks between Moscow and Kyiv aimed at ending hostilities.

“We deeply appreciate your personal involvement and the constructive platform provided by the UAE,” Putin told Al Nahyan, referring to the negotiations held in Abu Dhabi on January 23 and 24.

For his part, the UAE president reaffirmed his country’s commitment to strengthening ties with Russia and advancing shared development and security goals. He stressed the UAE’s firm support for political and diplomatic solutions to global conflicts, describing dialogue as the only viable path toward lasting peace.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov described the UAE as Russia’s principal trading partner in the Arab world, noting that bilateral relations are expanding across nearly all sectors. “Today symbolizes the strength of Russian-Emirati friendship,” he said.

Al Nahyan’s visit underscores the deepening strategic partnership between Moscow and Abu Dhabi at a time of heightened geopolitical uncertainty.
