Pakistan Fights Back Against Terrorism in Bannu Attack
According to Pakistan news and electronic media, a major terrorist attack targeted the high-security Bannu Cantonment in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Tuesday evening. The attack involved two explosives-laden vehicles that terrorists rammed into the perimeter wall in an attempt to breach security.
The Pakistan Army’s media wing, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), confirmed that security forces swiftly responded, killing all 16 terrorists, including four suicide bombers. However, the intense exchange of fire resulted in the martyrdom of five brave soldiers.
Tragically, 13 civilians also lost their lives, while 32 others sustained injuries due to the severe destruction of a nearby mosque and residential building caused by the suicide blasts. The blasts partially collapsed the perimeter wall, leading to further structural damage.
ISPR stated that intelligence reports confirmed the direct involvement of Afghan nationals in this deadly attack. Furthermore, evidence suggests that the attack was planned and directed by terrorist leaders operating from Afghanistan. The Pakistan Army has urged the Afghan interim government to prevent its territory from being used for terrorist activities against Pakistan.
Pakistan’s security forces remain committed to eliminating terrorism in all its forms. The sacrifices of the soldiers and civilians reinforce the country’s determination to safeguard its people and land at all costs.
Increasing Terrorism in Pakistan
Pakistan has witnessed a rise in terrorist activities, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, following the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) ending its ceasefire with the government in November 2022.
Bannu has become a frequent target for terrorist attacks. In July 2024, a similar attack on Bannu Cantonment resulted in the martyrdom of eight security personnel, while 10 terrorists were killed in retaliation. The ISPR attributed that attack to the Hafiz Gul Bahadur group, which operates from Afghanistan.
More recently, in November 2024, a suicide attack on a security check post in Mali Khel led to the martyrdom of 12 soldiers. In February 2025, two policemen were martyred in an attack on a police post in Fatehkhel.
Pakistan’s Response to Terrorism
According to a report by the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS), February 2025 saw a rise in terrorist attacks and civilian casualties. A total of 79 attacks occurred, leading to the deaths of 55 civilians and 47 security personnel. Another 126 people were injured, including 45 civilians and 81 security personnel.
Despite the challenges, Pakistan’s security forces have intensified counter-terrorism operations, eliminating 156 terrorists, injuring 20, and arresting 66 suspects last month. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s merged districts, 21 terrorist attacks were recorded, causing the martyrdom of 22 security personnel and eight civilians. However, security forces successfully killed 98 terrorists in the region.
The rest of KP witnessed 23 terrorist attacks, resulting in the deaths of 14 security personnel and 12 civilians, while 44 others were injured. Security forces managed to eliminate 47 terrorists in these operations.
Pakistan remains firm in its fight against terrorism and continues to take necessary measures to ensure peace and security in the country.
