Kremlin Backs Tehran: Araghchi Hails Russia’s Support Against US-Israeli Strikes

TEHRAN, June 23 — Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi described his recent meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow as both constructive and urgent, as the two sides discussed the growing threat of regional escalation following recent attacks on Iran, reported by Mehr News Agency.

Speaking to reporters Monday, Araghchi said he and Putin held detailed talks on what he called “unjustified aggression” targeting Iranian territory and nuclear infrastructure, stressing that the situation risks undermining both regional security and the global non-proliferation regime.

“We had a very good meeting. Russia has consistently stood by Iran, especially in our engagement with the P5+1,” Araghchi said. “The aggression on Iran and its nuclear sites is alarming not only for the region, but for international stability—and Russia shares that concern.”

The Iranian diplomat highlighted Moscow’s role at the UN Security Council, where he said Russia has taken a firm stance against U.S. and Israeli actions, though efforts have been stymied by Washington’s veto power. He called on other council members to push back against what he termed “illegitimate and unlawful” attacks.

Araghchi noted that Iran-Russia ties have evolved into a “strategic partnership,” underpinned by longstanding cooperation, including on nuclear energy. Russia is currently helping construct a nuclear power plant in Bushehr.

Putin, according to Araghchi, reaffirmed Russia’s condemnation of the U.S. and Israeli attacks, calling them “baseless” and emphasizing that Moscow is working to support Iran and prevent further destabilization.

“The level of tension is rising,” Araghchi warned. “But Iran will continue consultations with partners like Russia to uphold international law and resist unlawful aggression.”

The visit comes amid heightened geopolitical strain in the Middle East, with diplomatic channels narrowing and fears of wider conflict growing.
