On May 28, 2025, Italy’s Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani called on Israel to immediately cease its military operations in Gaza, emphasizing that the forced expulsion of Palestinians from the territory is unacceptable, as reported by Arab News.
Speaking before the Italian parliament, Tajani acknowledged Israel’s right to respond to the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks but criticized the ongoing military campaign as “tragic and unacceptable.” He urged for an immediate halt to the bombings, the resumption of humanitarian aid, and adherence to international humanitarian law.
Tajani also rejected proposals for the forced displacement of Palestinians from Gaza, stating, “The expulsion of Palestinians from Gaza is not and will never be an acceptable option.” He reaffirmed Italy’s support for the Arab-led reconstruction plan for Gaza, which aims to rebuild the territory without displacing its residents.
Italy has allocated over €100 million in aid to Palestinians since the conflict began, including €35 million announced in May 2025, with €5 million designated for UNRWA and the remainder for the “Food for Gaza” initiative.
The ongoing conflict has resulted in over 54,000 Palestinian deaths, according to Gaza health authorities. International figures, including Pope Leo, have called for an immediate ceasefire and the release of hostages.
Italy continues to advocate for a two-state solution and is open to participating in a potential Arab-led peacekeeping mission to ensure lasting peace in the region.
