Italian journalist Cecilia Sala, 29, known for her work with Il Foglio newspaper and Chora Media, has been detained in Iran since December 19, 2024. She was arrested by Tehran police while on on a reporting assignment with a valid journalist visa

Following her arrest, Sala was placed in solitary confinement at Tehran’s Evin Prison, with no official charges disclosed.

The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, under Minister Antonio Tajani, has been actively seeking clarification on her legal status and ensuring her well-being. Italian Ambassador to Iran, Paola Amadei, visited Sala in detention, confirming she has been allowed two phone calls with her family.

Chora Media reported that Sala arrived in Iran on December 12 and conducted several interviews, producing three episodes of her “Stories” podcast. She was scheduled to return to Rome on December 20, but communication ceased on December 19.

Il Foglio has called for her immediate release, emphasizing that “journalism is not a crime” and highlighting the challenges faced by journalists in Iran.

This incident occurs amid diplomatic tensions following Iran’s summoning of the Swiss ambassador and a senior Italian diplomat over the arrest of two Iranian nationals abroad.

Iran has a history of detaining foreign nationals, often leading to complex diplomatic negotiations.

The Italian government continues to work diligently for Sala’s release, urging discretion to facilitate a swift and positive resolution.
