Iran has expressed gratitude to Pakistan for its support during the ongoing conflict involving United States and Israel, as tensions continue to shake the Middle East, according to Dawn News.
On Monday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi publicly thanked the Pakistani government and its people for what he described as their “strong solidarity and support” with Iran. In a message written in Urdu on the social media platform X, Araghchi expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s stance during what he called aggression against the Islamic Republic.
In his message, the Iranian diplomat said Iran remains firm in defending its sovereignty and territorial integrity. He added that the country stands with determination and faith while facing military pressure from its adversaries.
The conflict began on February 28 when the United States and Israel launched strikes on Iranian targets. The attacks also led to the assassination of Iran’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, dramatically escalating tensions across the region. Since then, Iran has carried out retaliatory attacks on American military assets and bases located in several Gulf countries.
Amid the crisis, Pakistan has sought to maintain a careful diplomatic position. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the country as a “bridge builder,” emphasizing its efforts to reduce tensions and promote dialogue.
According to Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Pakistan also activated a Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement signed last year with Saudi Arabia. The agreement was used to help deter potential Iranian strikes on Saudi territory as regional fears of a broader conflict grew.
Meanwhile, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has been actively engaged in diplomatic efforts. Since the war began, he and Dar have held several phone conversations with leaders from countries across the region, calling for calm and urging all sides to de-escalate the conflict.
On March 12, Sharif also made a short visit to Saudi Arabia, where he met with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to discuss the rapidly changing situation in the Middle East and possible steps to restore stability.
At the United Nations Security Council, Pakistan has attempted to maintain a delicate balance. It has condemned attacks on Iran while also expressing solidarity with Gulf states threatened by retaliatory strikes.
Pakistan supported a resolution led by Bahrain condemning Iranian retaliation, which was later adopted by the council. It also backed a draft resolution proposed by Russia calling for restraint, though the measure was ultimately vetoed by the United States.
