IOK - Indian Occupied Kashmir Jammu & Kashmir

An Indian Army soldier was killed and eight others injured during a counter-terrorism operation in Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday night, military officials confirmed Monday, according to Greater Kashmir.

Havildar Gajendra Singh of the Special Forces died while participating in Operation TRASHI-I in the Singpura area on the night of January 19, according to a statement from the White Knight Corps posted on social media platform X.

The operation was initiated in Sonnar village near Mandral Singhpora in the Chatroo belt on Sunday. Security forces encountered armed militants, resulting in a gunfight during which eight soldiers sustained injuries, primarily splinter wounds from a grenade attack.

Operations were temporarily suspended Sunday evening due to challenging terrain conditions characterized by dense vegetation, steep slopes, and limited visibility. The search resumed at daybreak Monday with multiple teams from the army, police, and paramilitary forces conducting combing operations in the area.

Security forces have established a cordon around the suspected location of the militants and are utilizing drone surveillance and canine units to assist in the operation. Officials estimate that two to three militants, allegedly affiliated with the Pakistan based militant organization Jaish-e-Mohammad, remain in the upper reaches of the district.

As of the latest reports, no additional contact with the militants had been established since operations resumed Monday morning. The search operation continues in the mountainous terrain.

The White Knight Corps issued a formal tribute acknowledging the soldier’s service. Military officials stated they are providing support to the deceased soldier’s family.

Kishtwar district, located in the Jammu region, has periodically witnessed militant activity in recent years. The ongoing operation represents the latest in a series of counter-terrorism measures conducted by Indian security forces in Jammu and Kashmir.

Further updates on the operation are expected as the search continues in the Chatroo belt region.
