The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has lauded Pakistan’s contributions to the peaceful use of nuclear technology, recognizing its progress in civil nuclear energy during high-level talks in Vienna, according to APP.

The acknowledgment came at the 69th IAEA General Conference, where Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi met with Dr. Raja Ali Raza Anwar, chairman of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC).

Grossi commended Pakistan’s cooperation with the Agency, noting that its nuclear power program was “steadily advancing.” He highlighted the recent commissioning of Chashma Nuclear Power Plant Unit-5 (C-5) as a significant milestone in Pakistan’s efforts to expand clean and sustainable energy production.

Reflecting on his February 2025 visit to Pakistan, Grossi pointed to the first concrete pouring at a new nuclear power site as another landmark in the country’s drive toward sustainable energy.

The two leaders also reviewed collaboration in IAEA flagship initiatives. Under the Atoms4Food program, Pakistan has deployed nuclear techniques to improve crop yields, food safety, and pest management. Through Rays of Hope, it is helping expand access to nuclear medicine and radiotherapy for cancer treatment across the Asia-Pacific.

Grossi praised Pakistan’s proactive role in training, capacity building, and applying nuclear science for socio-economic development, calling the country a “valued partner” in advancing peaceful uses of nuclear energy.

Reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment, Dr. Anwar stressed that all of its nuclear facilities adhere to the highest international safety standards. He emphasized that Pakistan’s nuclear agenda aligns with the IAEA’s vision and pledged continued cooperation with the Agency and member states in promoting peaceful nuclear technology and regional development.
