The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, has called for a “very strong” nuclear verification system in Iran following the recent conflict in the Middle East. Speaking to reporters in Japan on June 26, Grossi stressed that strict international inspections are essential to ensure that Iran does not develop nuclear weapons, according to Hurriyet Daily News.
Grossi said the main goal of the recent understanding between the United States and Iran is to prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons. While Iran has repeatedly stated that it has no intention of building such weapons, the IAEA chief emphasized that words alone cannot guarantee compliance.
“Intentions are not enough,” Grossi said, adding that the international community must establish a strong and reliable verification system “as soon as is practicable.” He noted that only thorough inspections and continuous monitoring can provide confidence that Iran’s nuclear program remains peaceful.
The IAEA has long been responsible for monitoring Iran’s nuclear activities under international agreements. However, inspections have faced challenges in recent years due to tensions between Iran and Western nations. The latest conflict has further highlighted the need for effective oversight to reduce the risk of nuclear proliferation and strengthen regional security.
Grossi’s remarks underline the crucial role of the UN nuclear watchdog in promoting transparency and preventing the spread of nuclear weapons. As diplomatic efforts continue, the establishment of a robust verification mechanism is expected to be a key step toward rebuilding international trust and maintaining stability in the Middle East.
