France Demands Answers as US Ambassador Skips Diplomatic Summons Over Activist’s Death

In a sharp escalation of diplomatic tensions, France’s Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot has publicly demanded an explanation from the United States Ambassador Charles Kushner after the envoy failed to appear at a summoned meeting in Paris, according to Hurriyet Daily News. The no-show has prompted France to restrict Kushner’s direct access to government ministers, underscoring growing frustration over perceived interference in French domestic affairs.

The controversy stems from the recent killing of 23 year old far-right activist Quentin Deranque, who died from severe head injuries after a violent clash in Lyon earlier this month. Deranque, a mathematics student and nationalist involved with far-right groups, was beaten during skirmishes on the sidelines of a political event, an incident that has inflamed political divisions in France ahead of upcoming elections.

The U.S. Embassy in Paris reposted statements from the Trump administration condemning the attack and highlighting what it described as rising left-wing extremism and violence in France. French officials viewed these comments as unwelcome meddling in national matters, prompting Barrot to summon Kushner for clarification.

Yet when the meeting was scheduled for Monday evening, Kushner did not attend, citing personal commitments and sending a senior embassy official in his place. This marked the second time he has skipped such a summons; he previously did the same over criticism of France’s approach to antisemitism.

Speaking on France Info radio Tuesday, Barrot expressed surprise and disappointment. “When you have the honor of representing your country, the United States of America, in France as ambassador, you abide by the most basic customs of diplomacy and respond to summonses from the foreign ministry,” he said. He emphasized the need for a direct conversation, insisting that no foreign power should insert itself into France’s internal political debates, regardless of the circumstances.

While Barrot stressed that overall ties between France and the United States remain unaffected, he made clear that Kushner’s access to French officials would remain limited until he provides the requested explanation. He stopped short of confirming whether the ambassador might face declaration as persona non grata, leaving the door open for resolution.

The episode highlights the delicate balance of transatlantic relations under the current U.S. administration, where personal connections Kushner is the father of Jared Kushner, married to President Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka intersect with high stakes diplomacy.
