A European lawmaker has called for an urgent and independent investigation into a deadly attack on a girls’ school in southern Iran, warning that the strike could amount to a war crime, according to The Express Tribune.
Speaking at a memorial gathering outside the Iranian embassy in Brussels, Slovak Member of the European Parliament Milan Uhrik said the scale of the attack raised serious concerns. The incident took place on February 28 in the city of Minab, where Iranian authorities say a girls’ elementary school was struck, killing 175 people; most of them young students and injuring dozens more.
Uhrik described the attack as possibly deliberate, pointing to the high number of civilian victims, especially children. “If this was planned,” he suggested, “then it crosses a line into something far more serious.” He urged European institutions to take a clear stance and investigate what happened without delay.
Drawing comparisons to civilian casualties in Gaza, Lebanon, and Beirut, Uhrik said attacks on vulnerable groups such as women, children, and the elderly are often used to spread fear and pressure societies. He argued that such patterns cannot be ignored.
The lawmaker also criticised European leaders, calling them “weak” for not responding more forcefully. He accused them of failing to challenge what he described as aggressive policies by Israel and the United States, and said Europe must act independently when civilian lives are at stake.
According to reports cited by Al Jazeera, Uhrik has formally written to the European Commission requesting an investigation into the Minab attack.
Meanwhile, the incident remains disputed. Shortly after the strike, former US President Donald Trump blamed Iran’s own military, though he did not provide evidence. More recently, he said the situation is still “under study.”
With conflicting claims and no confirmed findings, the truth behind the Minab tragedy remains unclear leaving grieving families and a watching world still searching for answers.__Photo Courtesy X (Milan Uhrik)
