Escalating Tensions: Israeli Airstrikes Strike Beirut After Unclaimed Rocket Attacks

International

According to a report by Arab News, violence in Lebanon escalated as Israeli airstrikes targeted Beirut’s southern suburbs following unidentified rocket attacks from Lebanon toward northern Israeli settlements. This marked the first time since last year’s ceasefire that Israel struck Beirut.

Two Israeli missiles hit a building in the densely populated Hadath area, causing it to collapse. The Israeli army claimed the attack targeted a Hezbollah drone storage facility. However, the airstrikes caused chaos, forcing families to rush to schools to pick up their children amid evacuation warnings.

While reports say one person was wounded in the Beirut strikes, attacks on towns in southern Lebanon killed three people, including a woman, and injured dozens. The bombings also triggered political tension in Lebanon. President Joseph Aoun was informed of the situation during a meeting in Paris with French President Emmanuel Macron and other leaders. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam called for international intervention to stop Israel’s attacks and ordered an investigation into the unidentified rocket launches from Lebanon.

Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth reported that U.S. President Donald Trump advised Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu not to target major facilities in Beirut, such as the airport and port.

The Israeli army claimed that two missiles were launched from Lebanon, with one intercepted and the other falling inside Lebanese territory. This incident followed a similar attack last week, where six unidentified rockets were fired toward Israel, prompting Israeli retaliation.

No group has taken responsibility for the latest rocket attacks, and Hezbollah has denied involvement. The group reaffirmed its commitment to the ceasefire, stating that Israel was using the situation as an excuse for further aggression.

Israeli Defense Minister Yisrael Katz warned that if northern Israel did not remain calm, Beirut would also face consequences. Meanwhile, Israeli forces bombarded multiple towns in southern Lebanon, causing severe damage and casualties, including the deaths of a retired Lebanese army officer, his wife, and a displaced woman.

With tensions rising, Lebanese officials urged calm and called for the state’s exclusive control over weapons. However, the situation remains fragile as both sides continue their military actions.
