NEW YORK – Former U.S. President Donald Trump was sentenced to an “unconditional discharge” in a landmark case stemming from hush money payments made to adult-film actress Stormy Daniels. The decision, handed down in a New York courtroom, spares Trump any jail time, probation, or fines.
Trump, appearing alongside his attorney via video link, maintained a solemn demeanor as the proceedings unfolded. Addressing the court, Trump described the case as a “terrible experience” and reaffirmed his claim of innocence. His lawyer criticized the charges, calling them baseless and politically motivated.
The prosecution aligned with the defense’s position, recommending no prison, probation, or fine—a stance Judge Juan Merchan ultimately upheld. “This is an extraordinary case with immense public attention but involves relatively ordinary court procedures,” Merchan said.
The case, rooted in payments made during Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign, accused him of falsifying business records to conceal reimbursements for $130,000 in hush money paid to Daniels. Last May, a jury convicted Trump on 34 felony counts related to these allegations. Despite the convictions, the sentence reflects the unusual nature of the case and the prosecution’s request for leniency.
The trial marked the first criminal conviction for a former U.S. president, adding to the legal challenges Trump faces as he campaigns for re-election in 2024. Legal analysts noted that the unconditional discharge does not absolve the conviction but spares Trump immediate penalties.
The ruling underscores the complexities of high-profile cases where legal, political, and public interests converge.
