China Backs Iran as US Tensions Rise Ahead of Trump Visit

China has voiced strong support for Iran as tensions with the United States continue, just days before former US President Donald Trump is expected to visit Beijing, according to Anadolu.

During a meeting in Beijing on Wednesday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told Iran’s top diplomat, Abbas Araghchi, that China backs Iran in protecting its sovereignty and security. He also praised Iran’s willingness to pursue a political solution through diplomacy, stressing that stopping the violence is urgent and restarting conflict is not acceptable.

The talks marked the first face-to-face meeting between the two officials since the war involving the US and Israel against Iran began on February 28. The conflict has already caused heavy casualties and widespread displacement.

Trump is scheduled to visit China on May 14–15, according to the White House. Chinese officials said discussions with Washington are ongoing after the visit was delayed due to the conflict.

The meeting also comes as tensions rise in the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route for oil. The waterway has effectively been blocked by both US and Iranian forces, disrupting energy supplies worldwide. Wang said the international community is deeply concerned and called for safe and normal passage to be restored as soon as possible.

On Iran’s nuclear program, Wang reaffirmed China’s recognition of Iran’s right to peaceful nuclear energy and welcomed its pledge not to develop nuclear weapons. Meanwhile, Trump has warned that the US may take action to remove Iran’s enriched uranium.

Wang also urged Middle Eastern countries to take control of their future by strengthening dialogue and cooperation, especially between Iran and its Gulf neighbors.

As diplomacy stalls, Araghchi has been visiting regional and global allies, including Pakistan, Oman, and Russia, in search of support.
